Voter Credentials  (VC)

Voter Credentials

Private usernames and passwords.

Credentials, or usernames and passwords, are a common authentication tool used in countless services beyond online voting. Counting on the fact that a given user has unique credentials that are kept private, credentials allow a system to verify a user’s identity and eligibility on the platform.

Voter credentials are typically provided to voters prior to election day. They can be securely distributed through postal mail, SMS, and email, or can even be collected in person by the voter. Credentials should always be encrypted when stored on an election server to ensure election security.

Benefits

User Familiarity

Voter credentials are very similar to the username-and-password authentication methods voters use throughout their daily lives.

Hardware Free

Using credentials requires no extra hardware, such as eCard readers or biometric scanners.
