Voting Server (VS)

Voting Server

The heart of an online election.

The voting server is in charge of authenticating voters, checking their eligibility and accepting their votes as cast. When an encrypted vote arrives at the voting server, it validates the vote and stores it in the digital ballot box, which is the electronic database of the encrypted ballots. At the end of the election, the ballots are downloaded and decrypted from the digital ballot box.

The voting server is also responsible for producing, alongside the voting client, the voting receipts, return codes, and QR codes that make cast-as-intended and recorded-as-cast verifiability possible.

Voting servers, like any other server, can be susceptible to attacks by hackers and unauthorized third parties. For this reason, the security features mentioned in the other sections are necessary to maintain the integrity of the election. In order to minimize the possibilities that a voting server can be compromised, certain infrastructure-specific security measures are put in place. As there are numerous methods behind securing an online voting server, it is essential to clarify with the online voting provider which methods they use.
